CAO points decide which college courses you can realistically apply for in Ireland, and working them out by hand means juggling two different grading scales, a best-6 rule, and a Higher Maths bonus that doesn’t always apply the way people expect. This CAO points calculator handles all of that automatically. Add your Leaving Certificate subjects, pick a level and grade for each, and it live-calculates your total, highlights exactly which six subjects are counted, and applies the Higher Maths bonus only when you actually qualify for it.

How to use this CAO points calculator

1. Open the “How does this work?” explainer if you want a quick summary before starting, or skip straight to entering subjects.
2. Choose your Grading Scale: “Current (2017+)” for Leaving Certs from 2017 onwards, or “Old (Pre-2017)” if you’re calculating an older result.
3. Select the “My Subjects” tab (the default view).
4. Click “+ Add Subject” for each Leaving Certificate subject you’re counting.
5. For each subject row, type the Subject name, choose the Level (Higher or Ordinary), and select the Grade from the dropdown.
6. Tick “This is Maths” on your Mathematics subject row so the calculator knows to check it for the Higher Maths bonus.
7. Watch the Points value update on each row, and check the “Counts towards best 6” badge to see which subjects are currently included in your total.
8. Optionally, tick “Include LCVP Link Modules” and select your LCVP grade (Distinction, Merit, or Pass) if you completed the Leaving Cert Vocational Programme.
9. Review your Total CAO Points in the results card, along with the stats row, points breakdown chart, and full subject breakdown table.
10. Optionally enable “Add Report Details” to include a student name and custom note (school, exam year) on your exported report.

What this CAO points calculator does

The CAO (Central Applications Office) converts Leaving Certificate grades into a single points total used to rank applicants for Irish college and university places. This calculator reproduces that conversion directly: every subject you add gets a points value based on its level and grade, then the calculator automatically identifies your six highest-scoring subjects, since only the best 6 count towards your total, no matter how many subjects you actually sat. It also checks whether your Maths subject qualifies for the Higher Maths bonus and adds those 25 points on top of the best-6 total when it applies, rather than requiring you to remember the rule yourself.

How CAO points are calculated

Each subject’s points depend on two things: the level you sat it at (Higher or Ordinary) and the grade you achieved. Higher Level grades are worth substantially more points than the equivalent Ordinary Level grade band, which is why the calculator asks for level and grade separately rather than a single combined score.

Current grading scale (2017 onwards)

The Leaving Certificate moved to an 8-band H1-H8 / O1-O8 grading scale from 2017. This calculator’s “Current (2017+)” option applies the CAO points associated with each band.

Old grading scale (pre-2017)

Leaving Certs awarded before 2017 used a letter-grade system (A1, A2, B1, B2, B3, and so on) rather than the H/O numbered bands. Selecting “Old (Pre-2017)” switches the calculator’s grade dropdown and points table to match that older scale, so results calculated from an older certificate line up with how they were originally scored.

Why level matters as much as grade

A high grade at Ordinary Level is generally worth fewer points than even a modest grade at Higher Level. This is a deliberate part of the CAO system: it rewards taking the more demanding version of a subject, which is why switching a subject’s Level between Higher and Ordinary in the calculator, without changing anything else, can shift its points value substantially.

The best-6 rule

Irish students often sit more than six Leaving Certificate subjects, but CAO points only ever count the best 6. This calculator applies that rule automatically: as soon as you’ve entered more than six subjects, it identifies which six currently score the most points and marks each with a “Counts towards best 6” badge, updating live as you edit any grade. This means you can freely add every subject you sat without worrying about manually figuring out which ones to exclude, and you can immediately see the effect of improving or changing a grade on a subject that’s currently just outside your top 6.

The Higher Maths bonus, explained

Higher Level Maths carries a 25-point CAO bonus on top of its normal points value, but only if you achieve at least a H6 (or D3 on the old letter-grade scale). This calculator applies that bonus correctly by checking two conditions before adding it: that the subject is flagged as “This is Maths,” and that the achieved grade actually meets the H6 (or D3) threshold. A Higher Maths result below that threshold, or a Maths subject taken at Ordinary Level, does not receive the bonus, and the calculator won’t add it in either of those cases.

Because this bonus applies on top of whatever your best-6 total already includes, ticking “This is Maths” on the correct subject row matters even if Maths isn’t one of your highest-scoring subjects, since the bonus is calculated separately from the best-6 selection itself.

LCVP Link Modules as a competing subject

The Leaving Cert Vocational Programme (LCVP) Link Modules can add CAO points, but not in the same way as an ordinary seventh subject. Ticking “Include LCVP Link Modules” and selecting a grade, Distinction (66 points), Merit (46 points), or Pass (28 points), adds LCVP as an extra candidate for your best-6 selection. It only actually contributes to your total if its points beat your current weakest counted subject; otherwise it’s simply not selected, exactly like any other subject that falls outside your top 6. It never adds on top of your other six subjects’ totals.

Target Points mode: working backward from a goal

Instead of entering grades you already have, Target Points mode works in reverse. Enter your Target CAO Points (for example, 450, the points typically needed for a range of competitive courses) and the Number of Subjects Counted (usually 6), and optionally tick “Include Higher Maths Bonus” if you’re assuming that bonus is part of your plan. The calculator then shows roughly what grade you’d need to average across those subjects to reach your goal. As the tool itself notes, this is a rough guide rather than a guarantee, since real Leaving Cert results mix different grades across different subjects rather than landing on one uniform grade throughout.

Compare Scenarios: testing multiple grade sets

Compare Scenarios mode lets you save your current “My Subjects” setup under a name, such as “Predicted Grades” or “Hoped-for Grades,” build a second set of subjects and grades, and save that under a different name. Both scenarios then appear side by side, which is useful for comparing a realistic prediction against an optimistic target, or for testing how much your total would change if one specific subject grade improved.

Reading your results

Once you’ve entered your subjects, the results card shows your Total CAO Points prominently, along with a stats row, a Points Breakdown by Subject chart, and a full Subject Breakdown table listing every subject, its level, grade, and points contribution. If you’ve enabled Add Report Details, your student name and custom note (school, exam year, or any other label) appear on the report and carry through to any exported copy. You can export the full result as an Image, PDF, or CSV using the buttons in the export row, and save the scenario for later comparison.

A note on accuracy

This CAO points calculator is an estimate tool built around the published points tables and bonus rules. As the calculator’s own footer states, always confirm your official CAO points via www.cao.ie, since course-specific requirements, random selection at points ties, and any updates to the official points tables are determined by the CAO directly, not by this or any third-party calculator.
