Absolute Difference Calculator

Try an example:
Absolute difference
|A − B| = 27
Signed difference: −27 · % difference: 94.74%
How it's calculated

Absolute difference ignores which number is bigger — it's always the positive distance between two values: |A − B|.

Absolute difference is the positive distance between two numbers, regardless of which one is larger. This calculator finds it for two individual numbers, or across an entire list of numbers at once, alongside the signed difference and percent difference for extra context.

How to use this absolute difference calculator

  1. Choose Two Numbers or List of Numbers mode.
  2. For two numbers, enter Value A and Value B. For a list, enter comma or space separated values.
  3. Click Calculate to see the absolute difference, signed difference, and percent difference.

The absolute difference formula

Absolute Difference = |A − B|

The vertical bars mean “take the absolute value,” which strips away the sign, so the result is always zero or positive. This is different from the signed difference (A − B), which keeps track of which value was larger and by how much in a positive or negative direction.

Two numbers vs. a list of numbers

In Two Numbers mode, the calculator simply finds |A − B| for the pair you enter. In List of Numbers mode, it finds the absolute difference between each consecutive pair in your list, then reports the average, sum, and maximum consecutive difference — useful for spotting how much a sequence of values fluctuates, such as daily temperatures or price changes.

Frequently asked questions

Does it matter which number I enter as A and which as B?

No — absolute difference is always positive regardless of order, since |A − B| equals |B − A|. The signed difference shown alongside it does depend on order, so check that value if direction matters to you.

How is this different from percentage difference?

Absolute difference is a raw number in the same units as your inputs (like 27, or 27 degrees). Percent difference expresses that gap as a percentage relative to the average of the two values, which makes it easier to compare gaps across very different scales.

What does “average consecutive difference” mean in list mode?

It’s the average of the absolute differences between each pair of adjacent numbers in your list, in the order you entered them — a quick way to see how much a sequence typically moves from one value to the next.
