📚 How the 3-over-6 Rule Works

We look for the first day where 3 consecutive temperatures are all higher than the previous 6 temperatures, with at least one at least 0.2°F above the highest of those 6. This "coverline break" marks the thermal shift caused by post-ovulation progesterone — ovulation typically occurred 1–2 days before the shift begins. You need at least 6 low readings plus 3 rising readings (9+ days total) for detection to work.

Basal body temperature rises slightly after ovulation and stays elevated until your next period, a pattern that’s one of the most reliable at-home signs that ovulation has actually occurred. How to use this BBT calculator

What this BBT calculator does

Basal body temperature (BBT) is your body’s temperature at complete rest, and it follows a predictable biphasic pattern across a normal ovulatory cycle: relatively lower in the first half (the follicular phase), then a sustained rise of roughly 0.4 to 1°F (0.2 to 0.5°C) after ovulation, driven by the hormone progesterone, that persists through the second half (the luteal phase) until your next period. This calculator charts your daily readings and identifies where that sustained shift occurs, marking your estimated day of ovulation based on the pattern rather than a single guessed date.

Why timing and consistency matter for accurate readings

BBT only works as an ovulation indicator if it’s measured consistently, immediately upon waking, before any physical activity, and at roughly the same time each day, since even getting up to use the bathroom can raise your temperature enough to distort the reading.
