The calculator compares your Final Value against your Starting Value, using the starting value as the base, since that’s the point the drop is measured from. As with percentage increase, order matters here: the Starting Value and Final Value are not interchangeable, since swapping them would change what the result actually represents.
The numerator is how much the value dropped in absolute terms. Dividing that drop by the Starting Value expresses the decrease as a proportion of where you began, and multiplying by 100 converts it into a percentage. Because the Starting Value is always the denominator, the same absolute drop produces a larger percentage decrease when the starting point is smaller, and a smaller percentage decrease when the starting point is larger.
Using the calculator’s own example figures, a Starting Value of 2,345 and a Final Value of 1,870:
The value dropped by 475 units, and since that drop represents about a fifth of the original 2,345, the result comes out to roughly a 20.26% decrease.

All three rows share the same absolute drop of 475, but the percentage decrease differs considerably depending on the starting value.
