How to use this steel weight calculator
- Pick a Shape. Choose from the supported profile types: plate, bar, pipe, tube, angle, channel, or beam.
- Enter the shape’s dimensions. The fields shown adjust to match the shape you picked, for example thickness and area for a plate, or diameter and length for a round bar.
- Choose a Material, or enter a Custom Density in kg/m³ if you’re working with a material or alloy not in the list.
- Add a Price per Weight (optional), choosing per kg, per lb, per metric ton, or per US ton to match how your supplier quotes.
- Read the Total Weight for that item, plus its cost if you entered a price.

What this steel weight calculator does
Every steel shape has a standard way to convert its dimensions into a volume, and this calculator applies the correct formula for whichever shape you pick, whether that’s a flat plate, a solid or hollow bar, a pipe or tube with a wall thickness, or a structural angle, channel, or beam. That volume is then multiplied by the material’s density to get weight, and by your entered price to get cost.
Weight = Volume × Density
Volume is calculated from the shape’s dimensions; density comes from the selected Material or your Custom Density entry.
Working with the Bill of Materials mode
For a job with more than one piece of steel, the BOM table keeps every line in one place instead of running separate calculations and adding them up by hand. Each row tracks its own Shape, Material, and Quantity, with Unit Weight, Total Weight, and Cost calculated per line and summed across the whole list, giving you one combined project weight and cost.

When to use Custom Density
This steel weight calculator’s Material dropdown covers common options directly, but if you’re working with a specific alloy, grade, or a material outside the standard list, enter its density in kg/m³ under Custom Density instead. The weight calculation works exactly the same way from that point on, just using your entered value in place of a preset one.

Steel suppliers quote prices differently, sometimes per kilogram, per pound, per metric ton, or per US ton. Matching the Price per Weight unit to how your supplier actually quotes keeps the cost figure directly comparable to your quote.
Is the Bill of Materials mode useful for a single item?
It’s built for multi-item jobs, but there’s no harm in using it for one line either. For a single quick calculation, though, the standard shape and material fields without the BOM table are faster.
