The percentage increase formula

Percentage Increase = (Final Value − Starting Value) ÷ Starting Value × 100

The numerator is simply how much the value grew in absolute terms. Dividing that growth by the Starting Value expresses it as a proportion of where you began, and multiplying by 100 converts that proportion into a percentage. Because the Starting Value is always the denominator, the same absolute increase produces a larger percentage increase when the starting point is smaller, and a smaller percentage increase when the starting point is larger.

Worked example

Using the calculator’s own example figures, a Starting Value of 36 and a Final Value of 45:

Percentage Increase = (45 − 36) ÷ 36 × 100
= 9 ÷ 36 × 100
= 25%
